Surf legend Duke Kahanamoku is immortalized at this casual bi-level restaurant set on Kalapaki Bay. Guests can admire surfboards. photos. and other memorabilia marking his long tenure as a waterman. It's an interesting collection. and an indoor garden and waterfall add to the pleasing ambience. Duke's claims to have the biggest salad bar on the island. though given the lack of competition that isn't saying much. You can find simple fare ranging from fish tacos and stir-fried cashew chicken to hamburgers. At dinner. when prices increase. fresh fish prepared in a variety of styles is the best choice. A bar menu is available at the high-energy Barefoot Bar. A happy-hour drink and appetizer is a less expensive way to enjoy the moonrises and ocean views here -- though it can get pretty crowded.
It's hard to go wrong at Duke's. Part of a highly successful restaurant chain (including Duke's Canoe Club in Waikiki, and three similar restaurants on Maui), this oceanfront oasis is the hippest spot in town, with a winning combination of great view, affordable menu, attractive salad bar, popular music, and very happy happy hour. The noontime bestseller is stir-fried cashew chicken, but the fresh mahi burger and the grilled chicken quesadilla are front-runners, too. The inexpensive fish tacos are a major attraction. The five or six varieties of fresh catch each night are a highlight, prepared several different ways -- a great value. Hawaiian musicians serenade diners nightly, while downstairs in the Barefoot Bar, traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music adds to the cheerful atmosphere. On Tropical Friday, tropical drinks go for $3.50 from 4 to 6pm, when live music stirs up the joint.
